Commentary

Employers must consult with workers who carry out work and who are (or are likely to be) directly affected by a health and safety matter. Consultation with workers can help manage health and safety risks which may arise in the workplace by allowing workers to be actively involved in health and safety decisions which will help them to better understand the health and safety risks.

Preparing a WHS Consultation Statement allows an employer to record their consultation arrangements.

The Consultation Statement records:

  • the employer’s commitment to consultation in the workplace;
  • the WHS Consultation arrangements chosen;
  • the method of consultation adopted;
  • who was involved
  • how workers are advised of the outcome of consultation;
  • who is to take action and by when;
  • the roles and functions of WHS representatives/WHS committee members;
  • a procedure for resolving WHS problems; and
  • when and how consultation arrangements will be reviewed.

The Consultation Statement should be endorsed and signed by the CEO/General Manager and made available to all employees. The consultation arrangement should be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure it is meaningful and effective.
